Different Styles Of Mobile Phone by Mark Hirst

There are three main styles of phone that handsets tend to fall into, and which one you prefer is generally a matter of taste. Some manufacturers such as Motorola tend to make versions of all of their phones in all the different formats, while others have entirely different models in each range.

There are many reasons for the different basic forms of the mobile phone, but perhaps the main thing that pushes the phone into a particular shape is the constant compromise between fitting every tool into a box and making it fit into a pocket, whilst still being usable and ergonomic enough for people to want to buy one.

The three main types of mobile are called candy bar, slider, and clamshell, and all the main manufacturers have versions of each in their ranges. No matter what kind of style you prefer, the chances are that you can get a phone in your style with all the features that you want.

The Candy Bar mobile phone is probably the oldest style going, and was the first type of mobile phone that was available. The phone has a keypad and screen on the front, and usually has the camera lens on the other side if the phone has one. Candy bar phones tend to be slightly larger than other models, but can be much slimmer. They are generally seen as being a little less stylish than other kinds of phone, and are often more business like. Models include the Sony Ericsson T810i, and the Motorola SLVR phones.

The first popular clamshell phone was the Motorola StarTac, although there had been other phones previously that had a flip on the front of them. Typically, a clamshell phone has the keypad on one half, and the screen on the bit that folds out. They tend to be very small when closed and yet offer a large screen and a comfortable keypad when they are open. Clamshell phones also tend to be very ergonomic in use, with the shape fitting will around the contours of the face. Popular models include the LD Chocolate and the Motorola RAZR phones.

The newest major style of phone is the slider. With these, the keypad slides out from behind the screen. They are generally smaller than a clamshell phone in use, and are fairly comfortable in use. The only major drawback with this style when compared to the clamshell is that the screen can be exposed to damage such as scratching. Popular models in this style include the Samsung U600 and E900 mobile phones.
