iPhone 101 - Get all the Facts and Learn About all the Buzz by Matt Williams
* When - Apple's iPhone debuted officially on June 29th, 6:00 pm (est).
* What is it - It is a revolutionary mobile device from Apple that allows users to: Make and receive phone calls. Surf the Web. Play music, movies and videos. Visually display voice-mail messages. Display HTML e-mail.
* Specs - Under half an inch thick, unlike every other phone it has a solid glass surface, 3.5-inch screen (about the size of a deck of cards), no buttons
* What colors are offered - As Henry Ford once said: you can get it in any color as long as its Black.
* What does it cost - $499 for the model 4 gig and $599 for 8 gigs, plus a calling plan. Currently service is only available in the US through AT&T wireless. Plans start at $59.99 a month for 450 minutes of talking time, unlimited data, and 200 text messages.
* What is the warranty - standard 1 year warranty against defects, it does not cover misuse. Here is the Apple 1 year limited warranty. Of course, like the iPod, Apple retail outlets are somewhat forgiving if you have an accident so its always worth talking to them if you accidentally damage your iPhone.
* Where do I get one - You can try your Apple or AT&T store but they are likely sold out. You can also search on getitnext for iPhone deals listed on eBay.
* Is it durable - Well judge for yourself, do a quick search over on youtube and PC World has a video of them trying to scratch the iPhone. They also drop it 5 feet onto concrete repeatedly and it doesn't break.
* Is optional insurance offered - Currently the answer is no. Apple nor AT&T will offer insurance on the iPhone. However, a company called Safeware is rumored to be interested in offering it in the near future. Check out my previous blog to decide if you should wait or opt in for the iPhone insurance.
* How many have sold to date - Estimates are 750,000-1 Million, Apple has exceeded analyst's expectations.
* Will other wireless providers carry the iPhone - The short answer is no. The contract is exclusively with AT&T in the United States. Rogers is rumored to be in negotiations to win the contract in Canada.
* Is it compatible with iPod accessories - This is a tough one, in some cases yes in others no. The headphone jack is not the same as the iPod so if you have a high end headset like a Shure or Sony you will need an adapter. Check out one of my [http://getitnext.typepad.com//]previous blog if you own a Shure headset.
* Is apple going to release a new model soon - My answer is no, not in the short term. Apple is pretty good about not making things obsolete too soon. My bet is next spring they might come out with more memory and maybe different colors. This is a pure guess on my part.
