Mobile Phone Price Plans by Mark Hirst

All the major mobile phone networks offer a range of different pricing options for customers in which you can pay a specific amount per month as line rental, and then in return for this, they will adjust the amount of free minutes and text messages that you get bundled with your phone, as well as the price of any additional talk time and messages that you require.

Most mobile phone adverts that you see and most customers sign up for the lowest monthly rate they can, but this is not always the best deal for the person in question. As a guide, the standard plan on most networks costs around £20 per month, and depending on the network will normally include around the equivalent of about 100 minutes of calls, and 100 text messages. On top of this, additional calls cost around 20p per minute during the day, and 10p off peak, while text messages cost about 10p each.

The actual amount of calls and texts a person sends is dependent on them, but many high users will find that they send up to 500 text messages a month, and spend around 300 minutes on the phone. That works out at about 16 text messages a day, and 10 minutes of calls.

On average, this usage will cost them over £70 on top of their basic line rental making a total of £90 per month. However, most networks offer a high use tariff of around £50 that would have included all the additional minutes and text messages that the person sent.

The person who takes out a phone on a low line rental will end up spending more money in the long run if they are using it more than it is designed to be used, and if you find that your bills are high, you should speak to the network and check out whether a different price plan would be better value for money.

Not only do you get more free minutes every month on a higher tariff, you also get a lower cost per minute and text above the allowance that allow you to save even more money over the lifetime of the contract. The main reason that you do not often see these higher tariffs advertised is that the higher basic cost can put people off signing up for a particular deal, which is a shame, because by taking out what looks like a cheaper deal, they will pay more in the long run.
